The honest comparison depends on your situation: how far do you drive per day, can you charge at home and how much do you want to spend at purchase? This guide gives you the numbers and the honest conclusion.
Diesel or electric: what is the smartest used buy in 2026?
The decision rule is simple: choose a used electric car if you can charge at home (or at work) and drive at most 100 to 150 km per day - then you win on fuel costs, maintenance and tax. Choose a used diesel if you have no charging option, regularly drive more than 150 km per trip or per day or often make long journeys abroad. Home charging is the decisive factor: without a home charger, the cost advantage of electric disappears completely and diesel is cheaper to run.

Purchase price: diesel cheaper, EV falling fast
On used purchase price, diesel still wins at the entry levels. A Volkswagen Golf 7 TDI (2016, 120,000km) costs an indicative 12,000 to 14,000 EUR from a private seller. A comparable Volkswagen e-Golf (same generation, 130km WLTP range) costs 18,000 to 24,000 EUR - a difference of 6,000 to 10,000 EUR for an older, limited EV.
The picture changes with more modern EVs. A Renault Zoe ZE50 (2020, 395km range) now costs 12,000 to 16,000 EUR from a private seller. A Volkswagen ID.3 (2020-2021) goes for 16,000 to 22,000 EUR. Prices are falling fast thanks to a growing private supply of ex-lease EVs entering the market.

The conclusion is clear: the EV only wins with home charging. If you mainly charge publicly, you pay a comparable amount or more than diesel. Without a home charger or a socket at work, the cost advantage of electric disappears completely. This is the most underestimated point in the diesel-vs-EV debate.
Maintenance: EV virtually maintenance-free, diesel more parts
A modern diesel has considerably more wear-prone parts than an electric car. The annual maintenance costs for a diesel (oil, filter, timing belt/chain, DPF cleaning, EGR valve, brakes) are clearly higher (indicatively by tens of percent) than for a comparable EV.
Difference in maintenance over 5 years: roughly 1,500 to 2,500 EUR in favour of the EV. This compensates for part of the potentially higher purchase price of electric.
Reliability: DPF versus battery degradation
Modern diesel is no longer the carefree technology of 10 years ago. The DPF (particulate filter) is the most common problem: too many short city trips without regular high-speed runs clogs the DPF. A regeneration costs 300 to 600 EUR, a replacement 800 to 1,800 EUR. The EGR valve is a second wear point that typically needs attention after 120,000 to 150,000km.
Electric has its own risk: battery degradation. After 100,000km, a loss of 5 to 15 percent of the original capacity is normal, depending on charging behaviour. Always charging to 100 percent and fast charging accelerates degradation. On a Renault Zoe with a 395km range, that can come down to a practical range of 340 to 380km after 100,000km - still usable for most daily drivers.
A battery that has degraded by more than 20 percent for its age deserves extra negotiation. Always ask for a State of Health (SoH) measurement of the battery at purchase - this takes 10 minutes with an OBD2 tool and the right app.
Daily use: which suits whom best?
Practical use decides the outcome more than any other factor. The map is simple:
Insurance and tax: the EV has the edge in BE and NL
In Belgium, electric cars pay no registration tax (the BIV is EUR 0 for zero-emission vehicles) and the annual road tax is also EUR 0. In the Netherlands, a road tax (MRB) discount applies to fully electric vehicles; it is being phased out gradually but still applies to used EVs registered before 2025.
Insurance: EVs are on average slightly more expensive to insure because of the higher repair costs when the battery is damaged. The difference is often a few hundred euros extra per year for an equivalent EV compared to diesel (indicative, always request quotes). This is shrinking as more insured drivers go electric and claims statistics build up.
