Audi A3 8P (2003-2012): solid entry point
The A3 8P is the most affordable entry into the Audi brand and sits on the same platform as the Volkswagen Golf 5 and 6. That means it shares both the strengths and the weaknesses. The 1.9 TDI (BKC/BXE) and 2.0 TDI (BKD) diesel engines are proven reliable and go far when maintained properly.
The biggest risk on the 8P with DSG (S tronic DQ250): a slipping clutch at higher mileage, especially if the DSG oil has never been changed. Audi A3 8V (2013-2020): stronger model, watch the 1.4 TFSI
The A3 8V is a generational leap: sharper design, a better interior and the new MQB platform shared with the Volkswagen Golf 7. Generally more reliable than the 8P, but there is one specific point of attention: the 1.4 TFSI with cylinder deactivation (COD technology).
The ACT technology (Active Cylinder Technology) in the 1.4 TFSI 150hp shuts down two cylinders under light load. An important point that is often overlooked: depending on the engine version, the A4 B8 has either a timing belt (which must be replaced every 4 years or 120,000km) or a timing chain. The 2.0 TDI with the CAHA engine code has a belt; the 2.0 TDI with the CAGA has a chain. Check this before buying: an overdue timing belt is a time bomb.

Audi A4 B9 (2015+): more reliable with mild hybrid

From 2019, the B9 models come with mild hybrid (MHEV) technology on the 2.0 TDI and 2.0 TFSI. In practice this system is generally trouble-free. Points of attention on the B9: check the software updates (several recalls applied) and have the bodywork inspected for paint issues on early production examples.

The second-generation Audi Q5 (FY) is the most popular premium SUV in its class on the private market in Belgium. Spacious, comfortable and quattro as standard on most versions. The 2.0 TDI 190hp is the most common and sought-after combination.
The specific point of attention on the Q5 FY: the 7-speed S tronic gearbox (DL501) requires regular oil changes that are frequently skipped in a lease history. Check whether the DSG oil has been changed - if in doubt: have it done before purchase or budget 150 to 200 EUR at an Audi dealer. The DQ250 (6-speed wet clutch), the DL501 (7-speed for larger engines) and the DQ200 (7-speed dry clutch, smaller models) all have an oil interval that Audi officially labelled "lifetime" - but in practice that is misleading.
