The Fabia is the logical entry into the brand and a popular first car. The Fabia II (2007-2014) is by now true budget territory; the Fabia III (2014-2021) combines a low purchase price with modern three-cylinder engines; the Fabia IV (2021+) has grown and feels close to a compact mid-size car.
Attention points: the early 1.2 TSI in the Fabia II belongs to the same EA111 family with the known chain reports, so ask about the history or choose an example where the chain has demonstrably been replaced. The later 1.0 MPI and 1.0 TSI engines in the Fabia III and IV count in the community as simple, willing technology without structural complaints. Skoda Superb: a lot of car for the money
The Superb is the secret weapon of the range: space at the level of a large premium saloon for the budget of a mid-size car. The Superb II (2008-2015) is the budget choice; the Superb III (2015-2023) is technically a stretched Octavia III and benefits from the same mature EA211 and EA288 technology. Many Superbs covered long motorway miles as company cars: that is generally healthier than city traffic, as long as the maintenance history is complete.
Attention points from the community: on diesels that mainly did short trips, EGR and particulate filter complaints occur and here too a DSG gearbox deserves a check of its history. The 2.0 TDI with a manual gearbox or wet-clutch DSG counts as one of the most carefree combinations for high mileages.
Skoda Kodiaq and Kamiq: the SUV route
The Kodiaq (2016+, facelift 2021, second generation from 2024) is the big family SUV and one of the most wanted Skodas on the private market, certainly as a seven-seater. Buying from a private seller: how to do it safely
Buying privately is often cheaper than at a dealer, but you buy without a warranty: you have to do the checks yourself. In Belgium the Car-Pass document is legally required at the sale: it shows the mileage history and is your first protection against rolled-back odometers. In the Netherlands you check the history for free via the RDW using the licence plate. Also request maintenance invoices, certainly for a DSG gearbox or a chain replacement on early TSI engines.
