Mercedes C-Class W204 (2007-2014): affordable, but check the chain
The W204 is the most affordable entry into a real Mercedes and still feels solid even at its age. The diesel versions (C200 CDI and C220 CDI with the OM651 engine from 2009) are the safe choice: robust, economical and capable of high mileage as long as they are maintained.
The best-known risk sits with the early petrol engines: the M271 units (C180/C200 Kompressor and early CGI, roughly up to 2011) are known in the community for stretching timing chains and wearing chain tensioners and camshaft adjusters. A rattling noise on cold start is an alarm signal; a chain replacement quickly runs towards 1,000 to 2,000 EUR. Also check for rust on the wheel arches and boot lid on early build years and ask whether the 7G-Tronic automatic ever had an oil change.

The Estate typically fetches 500 to 1,000 EUR more than the saloon on the private market and sells on faster. A facelift example (2011+) with the C220 CDI and a full service book is the sensible buy in this segment.
Mercedes C-Class W205 and W206 (2014+): the 220d rule of thumb
The W205 is a generational leap: lighter, quieter and with an interior that leans towards the S-Class. The C220d is the logical choice here. Up to 2018 that is the matured OM651, after that the more modern OM654: both are known as engines that reach high mileage effortlessly with normal maintenance.
Points of attention on the W205: diesels that mainly did short trips can build up AdBlue and EGR faults (clogging and blocked valves are frequently reported) and the electronics (sensors, COMAND) deserve a full function test. The W206 (2021+) is still young on the private market and almost always ex-lease; supply is thin, the drivetrain is fully mild hybrid and most points of attention sit in the MBUX electronics. Only buy a W206 with a demonstrable dealer history.

Mercedes E-Class W212 (2009-2016): a lot of car, two known points
The W212 is one of the most underrated bargains in the premium segment: plenty of space, comfort and technology for the money of a compact family car. The E220 CDI and E250 CDI are the most sought-after versions and are regarded as tireless mile-eaters.
Two known points. First: the early OM651 diesels (roughly 2009-2011) had injector problems; many examples were fixed under a recall campaign, but ask about it and listen for hard ticking on a cold start. Second: the Estate has air suspension on the rear axle as standard; sagging air bags or a struggling compressor quickly cost 400 to 800 EUR per side. Let the car settle after the test drive and check whether it sits crooked. Rust is clearly less of an issue than on its predecessor, but check the wheel arches anyway.

Mercedes E-Class W213 (2016-2023): modern tech, check the suspension
The W213 is technically the most mature E-Class on the private market. The E220d with the OM654 engine is the star of this generation: quiet, economical and with virtually no structural complaints in the community, provided maintenance has been kept up.
What to check on the W213: the optional Air Body Control air suspension (comfortable, but an expensive item if an air spring or the compressor gives up out of warranty), the AdBlue system on examples with a lot of city miles and the electronics behind the big widescreen dashboard: test every function and have fault codes read out. Many W213s come out of lease; that is no objection as long as the digital service record is complete.

Mercedes GLK and GLC: the SUV route
The boxy GLK (X204) shares its technology with the W204 and is therefore a sensible, underrated SUV: the same robust OM651 diesels, the same points of attention (7G-Tronic oil, rust on early build years). Its successor, the GLC (X253), is the most popular premium SUV on offer and shares its basis with the W205.
With a GLC you almost always buy ex-lease or ex-company: so do not be guided by the shiny exterior but by the service history. Known reports from the community: creaking or leaks around the panoramic roof, EGR and AdBlue faults on diesels with many short trips and the 9G-Tronic automatic which, like the 7G-Tronic, benefits from a timely oil change. The GLC 220d is the common, sensible choice here too.
